Microsoft Gets Patent Approved for “Avoid Ghetto” Feature on GPS

“Among these sources are crime statistics. Which has led some to the thought that this will somehow be an insult to poor neighborhoods.”

You’re kidding me. What are you doing, Microsoft?

Turn…Left…to….avoid….negroes

Please… roll up your windows.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind this feature. I really would prefer driving through safer neighborhoods instead of, y’know, getting shot. Which is pretty common. Driving home from school with my mum the other night was nothing short of ‘don’t stop and look straight ahead, don’t stop don’t stop don’t look or we’ll get shot’. And my dad went through a REALLY bad neighborhood in Detroit because his Mapquest directions were wrong. And no, this isn’t ACTUALLY what the patent is for, it’s not for ‘avoiding the ghetto’ or ‘avoiding the black people’. It’s for pedestrians, to pick safe places for them to walk and avoid violent crime, NOT just the ghetto. That’s what other people have dubbed it, not Microsoft. Some idiot somewhere decided it was a great idea to make this a racial issue when it wasn’t. I’m pretty sure -all- of us would prefer to be walking or biking or whatever somewhere safe instead of through two miles of blacktop you might never come out of.

Seriously.

This is no way about ‘not wanting to see black people’ or avoiding them. It’s about those of us who live in an unsafe city and have to navigate tricky areas at night. I don’t want to drive through the gun violence capitol of the united states at night trying to get home if there’s another route possible. I wish these neighborhoods didn’t exist so we wouldn’t have to do this, but it’s a necessity. I don’t want to be in danger, and if an application/device can help me to do that, I would be first in line.

it truly has nothing to do with Race, it has to do with the fact that some cities really do have areas where people are not safe walking/driving. both cities ive lived in, this has been the case. and its really scary to know that you’re driving down a street, two blocks away from your high school, and people were killed there the night before. because guess what, ive seen it happen.

i really do think the initial concept of this is a great idea, because people walk into these areas without realizing it and get hurt.
